Researchers Charles Mellerio and Anne-Isabelle de Parcevaux have explored the brain activity of musicians using functional MRI, revealing significant differences between their brain functions and those of non-musicians. Their findings, which highlight how musicians' brains anticipate music and engage multiple regions for auditory perception, movement, emotion, and more, have been documented in a scientific article. This research indicates that each musician's brain exhibits unique activation patterns related to their instrument or vocal performance. Additionally, a second phase of their study examined musical improvisation, showing that different musical styles activate distinct neural pathways. Their collaborative work emphasizes the intersection of neuroscience and music, demonstrating that music is a complex experience involving movement, memory, and emotion. This research will be presented at JFR 2025.
